Equity in STEM and computer science education is about ensuring that all students have the foundational knowledge that will allow them to productively participate in today’s world and make informed decisions about their lives.

Computer science and STEM is more than a discipline for a select few; it is an essential 21st century literacy for all students.

Project Stem: Our Mission

Project STEM is a nonprofit organization focused on advancing equity in computer science and STEM education by inspiring and empowering PreK-12 students and teachers in schools and districts across the U.S.

At the core of our mission is a belief that an understanding and love of computer science and STEM is critical to creating a generation of engaged learners who can change the world. It is that simple. And it fuels our work to support our teachers and schools in making this happen.

With over 51 percent of all STEM jobs projected to be in computer science-related fields, supporting middle and high school computer science and STEM in underserved communities, schools and districts is critical to ensuring equity in opportunity for all students. We believe that computing is so fundamental to understanding and participating in society that it is required for every student to learn from the earliest grade-levels. No other subject will open as many doors in the 21st century, regardless of a student’s ultimate field of study or occupation. In our digital age, students must be able to do more than simply use a computer; they must understand how computers work, explore potential applications and impact, and develop the skills required to creatively use this knowledge to solve real-world problems.

We cannot do this work alone. We work closely with educators and industry to develop and validate our programs. We collaborate with educators, schools and district partners, university, industry, and nonprofit partners to create opportunities for students and teachers to be recognized and expand on their skills. We are thankful for the support of educators, universities, industry partners and other organizations and volunteers, and who support our mission in so many ways.

We believe all children should have access to high-quality computer science and STEM education, and believe all students can succeed when given the right support and opportunities, regardless of prior knowledge or privilege. We are committed to helping close well-known equity gaps within the field of computer science and STEM.

Early exposure to computer science and STEM is critical to significantly expanding the number, representation, and outcomes of students in later grades. We believe these early foundations are vital to setting students up for success as they pursue computer science and STEM in later grades.

We believe students learn best with the help of an empowered and fully-supported teacher. Knowing that many of our teachers are new to computer science themselves, we include an abundance of materials and teaching supports in our curricula, along with dedicated, personalized ongoing implementation support, to specifically target their needs.
